How Developing a Self Care Routine Helps You Become a Happy Homemaker

STOP! Before you do another task for someone else in your household, have you taken the time to refill your bucket?

If the answer is, no, then I ask that you really take time to do that now. In this post, I’ll share with you several reasons why that is, but I’m sure you already know the obvious answer: you can’t pour from an empty bucket.

We’ve discussed this very briefly in a previous blog post, but in this post, I’ll go into depth.

How does a self-care routine help you become a happy homemaker?

According to our dear friend, Merriam -Webster, a routine means:

: a regular course of procedure
: habitual or mechanical performance of an established procedure

Having a self-care routine is truly beneficial because it helps to create a habit to take care of yourself on a more consistent basis. Does it have to be every day? I think so. I know not every day will go as planned, however, every day should have a plan. Within that plan, some sort of self-care should be on the agenda.

Spending time with yourself isn’t selfish, it’s just allowing you to learn more about who you are and what you like. This is crucial. Think about your best relationship, it’s only like that because you were intentional (at some level) to get to know that person and use that knowledge to show them, love. It’s the same thing.

Make it a routine to get to know yourself and show love to yourself on a daily basis. Self-care = self-love. Do you agree with me on this?

 

What should your self-care routine include?

There’s no limit or rule to what you can and cannot include in your routine. But it’s important to identify your must-haves. Not every day will allow for a full 30-minute window for self-care, so you’ll need to have a condensed version. However, the possibilities when it comes to forming your routine are endless! To give you an idea, here’s what I include in my morning self-care routine(or will include really soon):

  • 3 step face wash routine (wash, exfoliation, & moisturizer)
  • Quiet time for meditation & devotion
  • Stretching
  • Breathing practices
  • Workout

When I am intentional about my mornings, this is what I do. My goal is to make this a mandatory start to my day so this becomes a routine and not just one of many routines.

However, if I needed to condense this routine for any reason (like waking up late), here is my condensed, must-do routine:

  • Quick face wash
  • Devotion (3 minutes)
  • Quick stretch (2 minutes)

See, it’s condensed and even simpler than the original routine I shared.

How often should you do a self-care routine?

The short answer, as often as you mentally need to. There have been times I took a full day to focus on my needs. I didn’t take care of the kids or hubby much; I needed to pull away and rest from it all. This is because I would go days pouring into my family without refilling my bucket. I was mentally depleted.

But to give you more of a definitive answer I strongly urge you commit to at least once a day.  I personally find it easier to have a good day if I can start my day by loving on myself. However, self-care routines aren’t limited to only mornings.

What are a few examples of a self-care routine?

There are 3 most known times and purposes for self-care routines:

  • Morning - get ready for the day
  • Afternoon/evening - to refill bucket, pick-me-up
  • Night - Wash the day off & decompress

We’ve already covered what can come in a morning routine, here are a few examples for the other two.

 

Afternoon/evening self-care activities (choose one)

  • 5 minutes worth of meditation
  • Paint nails
  • Face steaming
  • Reading a book
  • Hobby/interest

The afternoon/evening routine is the most flexible in the sense that you can do whatever you deem is creative and fun. This is the time you can incorporate your hobby or try new hobbies. This routine is also one that is “optional” as sometimes days don’t always go the way we’d like for them to go.

Night self-care routine

  • Shower
  • Quick face wash
  • Prep next day’s outfit
  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Sleep

Of course, you can choose the order in which you do each activity. But this is a quick example of what a night routine could look like. Once I develop my full night routine, I’ll share it with you (this just goes to show you, I don’t have it all together either)!

How can I implement self-care routines each day?

The easiest way to implement a self-care routine is to start with the beginning of your day. Wake up 15-30 minutes earlier to get your self-care activities done. If you don’t know what to do, just do what I do. You can always modify it to fit your lifestyle and preferences. Over time, if you commit to your activity, it’ll become a part of your daily routine.

Take away: make a commitment to yourself to spend at least 15 minutes each day with yourself.
