Giving birth is one of the most transformative and intense experiences a woman can go through. After the baby is born, the postpartum period can be just as challenging, both physically and emotionally. Recovery takes time, but there are things you can do to help speed up the process. Here are nine things that can help you recover quickly in your postpartum journey.

Rest

Rest is essential for postpartum recovery. Your body has just gone through an intense physical experience, and it needs time to heal. It's important to listen to your body and rest when you need to. This may mean taking naps during the day or going to bed early at night. Try to avoid overexerting yourself, and ask for help from friends and family when needed. I realize that this is so much easier sad than done, however, it is important to say. You need rest.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is also important for postpartum recovery. Your body needs water to heal and to produce breast milk if you're breastfeeding. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water per day, and drink more if you're thirsty or if you're exercising. An added bonus if you drink liquids with electrolytes. Eat Nutritious Foods

Eating a nutritious diet can help to speed up postpartum recovery. Focus on eating whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. These foods provide your body with the nutrients it needs to heal and recover. If you're breastfeeding, it's important to eat enough calories to support milk production. You don’t have to overeat, just eat until you’re full (not stuffed). Even if you can’t eat the healthiest (although I fully encourage you to do so) calories matter. If you need something sweet, make sure it’s chocked full of protein. Here’s my go-to “meal” when I  don’t have time to grab a 3-course meal because my baby is crying, breastfeeding, or needing my attention for something! (Psst…it has 32 g of protein).

Practice Pelvic Floor Exercises

Pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels, can help to strengthen the muscles that support your pelvic organs. These muscles can become weakened during pregnancy and childbirth, leading to urinary incontinence and other issues. Pelvic floor exercises can help to prevent and treat these issues. This is something all moms should look into, even if you don’t experience visible issues.

Use a Postpartum Support Belt

A postpartum support belt can help to support your abdominal muscles as they heal. These belts are designed to provide gentle compression and support to your belly, back, and hips. They can help to reduce pain, improve posture, and provide a sense of comfort during the postpartum period. It’s one of the items I regret not getting. Don’t be like me in this instance. Get Moving

While it's important to rest during the postpartum period, it's also important to get moving. Gentle exercise can help to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and promote healing. Start with simple exercises like walking or gentle yoga, and gradually increase the intensity as your body heals. Of course, you want to make sure you’re after the 6 week mark and have talked with your care provider.

Build a Support Group With Other Moms

The postpartum period can be isolating, and it's common to experience a range of emotions during this time. It’s very helpful to have other moms who understand the struggle in your corner. And I’m not just talking about moms in general; I’m not just talking about experienced moms who haven’t experienced postpartum in decades. You need a wide range of mothers! Some who are either in the postpartum stage or just coming out of it as well. Because while you need to feel like you’re not alone, you also need to be assured that you’re you’re to making it out alive and with your sanity (which you will)!

Attending a postpartum support group can also help you connect with other new moms and get the added support you need. These groups provide a safe space to share your experiences, ask questions, and receive support.

Take Care of Your Emotional Health

The postpartum period can be challenging emotionally as well as physically. It's important to take care of your emotional health during this time. This may mean reaching out to a therapist or counselor, practicing self-care activities like meditation or journaling, or simply spending time with friends and family who provide a supportive environment.


For me, personally, I relied heavily on my faith. Don't get me wrong, my husband was an amazing support beam to lean on when my mental state got a little dicey, and my family was there if I needed to talk. However, the word of God really reassured me that everything would be okay!
